Redistricting starts with the Census, held every 10 years. The Federal Government makes the results available to the states. In Montana, an independent Districting and Apportionment Commission then redraws the U.S. Congressional and State Legislative House and Senate district boundaries, the goal being to equalize the number of residents each representative and senator represents.
After the Commission's maps are determined, counties redraw Precinct lines so they correspond to new House District boundaries and contain no more than 2,000 residents each. This was accomplished on March 29, 2023.

There are now 15 precincts in Lincoln County.
