A report was released recently highlighting how Montana will likely be hit harder by federal cuts than other states due to it receiving a larger than average share of federal funding. The report highlights Montana’s large nonprofit sector, the funding that is directed towards Montana’s tribal governments, and how rural Montana may be impacted by funding cuts. The full report can be found below.
Recent DOGE cuts are impacting Americorps funding, putting Montana Conservation Corps’ upcoming summer season in limbo. MCC plays an essential role in our states’ conservation efforts, trail construction and maintenance, wildland fire mitigation, and disaster relief, as well as providing important service opportunities for young people in Montana. You can read more about recent Americorps cuts and their potential impact on Montana below.
Federal cuts from DOGE are taking a serious toll on America’s national parks—including Montana’s own Glacier and Yellowstone. These parks are not only natural wonders but key pillars of our state’s economy, drawing millions of visitors each year. Now, with staff reductions, delayed maintenance projects, and fewer seasonal hires, the parks are struggling to keep up with basic operations. This doesn’t just hurt tourism—it undermines our states’ local economies that depend on park-related jobs and revenue.
Missoula’s spectrUM Discovery Area is also in the crosshairs. The museum, which brings hands-on science education to thousands of Montana children each year—especially in rural and underserved communities—is facing a steep loss in federal funding due to DOGE’s budget cuts. Without this support, spectrUM may have to scale back its outreach, limiting access to high-quality STEM learning just when our state needs it most. These cuts put Montana’s future at risk by undermining the education and opportunity our kids deserve.
